Developing a conceptual digital tool for mapping of food loss and waste (FLW).

FLW Norway

Location:
Rørosmeieriet AS, Norway

Application:
FLW logging tool

Impact:

Increasing energy efficiency and improving overall sustainability of food systems by reducing the food loss through the chain, lowering raw material requirement. Making data on food loss volume available and creating awareness of possible reduction measures among stakeholders and citizens.

A high amount of food is lost or wasted in the supply chain, which contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of this demonstrator is to develop a conceptual digital tool to map the food loss and waste (FLW) from two different supply chain stages and to obtain detailed data on which product types are wasted, waste volumes and causes or drivers for FLW. The focus of the tool will be automatic registration using digitalization and avoiding increased labour hours for manual data registering. The possibility of integrating mandatory reporting of energy consumption and other waste generation using this tool will also be explored.

The work will identify the existing digital systems and software that are in use in the industry today and determine how compatible they are with the tool. After developing and designing the tool, it will be validated by at least two industry/retail actors representing two different supply chain stages.

Better data availability will allow industry to both initiate and evaluate reduction measures and can enable FLW reduction. Reducing the FLW will have a direct effect on carbon emissions, since less energy is needed to produce the same amount of food, and also reduce emissions arising from handling and treatment of waste.
